Tatdhabhaya’ Jataka |
|
|
:: The motive of the Lord Buddha’s recollection
of this story can be detailed as follows: ::
|
.....At that time, the Lord Buddha resided in Jetavana Temple. Reflecting upon the codes of conduct of
the heretical ascetics who dwelled around the area outside Jetavana Temple, He rendered the verse as follow:
.....Those heretics practise various self-mortifications, lying on the thorn bed, burning five different
items as an act of sacrifice.
.....At that time, monks, after wandering into the City of Sadri for almsround, returned to Jetavana Temple.
They met the pagan ascetics on their way back. They, therefore, went to have an audience with
the Lord Buddha to ask a question about the essence of the practice belonging to the certain group of ascetics.
.....The Lord Buddha said: “Behold monks, the obligations practised by those heretics are void of substances
and virtues. Once you have a close look into it, you will find it appears as if the region was filthy with waste
and refuse. And it seems like the rabbit getting a fright of a loud noise.
.....At this point, the monks entreated the Buddha to clarify the content. The Lord Buddha, thus, gave the story of the above Jataka.
