The Origin of the Story

      Two hawkers are successively offered by its unwitting owners a golden bowl. Thegreedy hawker over-reaches himself, whilst the honest one is richly rewarded.

      This story was taught by the Blessed One while at the city of Savatthi, about a monk who gave up persevering. For, when he was brought by the brethren monks to have the audience with the Buddha, the Master said, ‘You, who after devoting yourself to this glorious doctrine which bestows Path and Fruit, are giving up persevering, will suffer long, like the hawker of Seri who lost a golden bowl worth a hundred thousand pieces.’

      Monks asked the Blessed One to explain this to them. Thus, the Buddha made clear a thing concealed from them by rebirth.

The revealing of the identities

      Said the Lord Buddha, in those days Devadatta was the evil hawder; and I myself was the wise and good one. And it was as, Serivan, the unscrupulous, that Devadatta had for the first time, conceived this ugly hatred, for the Lord Buddha.

What are learned from the story:

      1. Possessing such an intense greed leads to the destruction in life.
      2. The fool see none but others’ shortcoming.
      3. The fool, knowing all the truth but giving up the striving ruin the chance to attain the incomparable path.
