Power Through Merit

Whatever we set out to accomplish in life, we must examine  our condition as well as the position of our merit, i.e., the “spiritual capital” that we have built up.  Attempt things that are within our current ability to accomplish; don’t overreach your limit. If you desire greatness, achieve your greatness through merit, not through unwholesome actions or defilements.  Achievements of greatness through the power of merit are  genuine achievements. But  greatness achieved through defilements will eventually collapse.

Look at  Devadatta as an example.  He achieved only a tiny success but became disillusioned with himself and sought to be famous.  He did so without looking at whether he had built up enough foundation of goodness to deserve it.  This resulted in his great demise.

It is like building a house on  flimsy foundations and wanting the house to be gigantic.   The result is predictable: the house will end up collapsing.

If you wonder how I have done all that I have accomplished, I tell you it is  due to the great amount of merits I made accumulated--as great as a mountain, and also due to my insurmountable patience.  The reason I have become famous and have so many followers is due to the virtues that I performed in  the past.
